NASF/AESF Foundation Research Project #123: Electrochemical Manufacturing for Energy Applications – 2nd Quarterly Report

For 2022, NASF-AESF Foundation Research Board has selected a project on electrodeposition toward developing low-cost and scalable manufacturing processes for hydrogen fuel cells and electrolysis cells for clean transportation and distributed power applications.  This report is the 2nd quarterly report, covering work during April-June 2022 and consists of an edited manuscript, “Manufacturing and Thermal Shock Characterization of Porous Yttria-Stabilized Zirconia for Hydrogen Energy Systems.”

Powder on Galvaneal

We have customers that want a smooth powder coating on a galvaneal finish. We prep with a light alcohol wipe, prebake the parts to allow for off-gassing, then spray with a smooth powder. We are having problems with “craters” and specs, so the surfaces won’t pass a class “A” test. Is there a way to coat a galvaneal part with a smooth powder that does not have a special additive?

The effects of a new ionic liquid additive 1-butyl-3-methylpyridinium bromide [BMPy]Br on the electrodeposition of zinc on steel substrates from acidic sulfate solution was investigated by employing potentiodynamic polarization and cyclic voltammetry techniques complemented with XRD and SEM measurements.
